Cancun - Isla Holbox, Arrival date: 06-04-’23 till 14-04-’23

First impression:

From the hotel to Brussels Airport, our trip was short, but 45 minutes delayed our flight to Madrid, according to the gate announcement. This meant that it could be a tight window to get our connecting flight to Cancun. Taking in count that we have to run through the Airport and get through customs and security. So on our arrival we sprinted with our cabin luggage right through the Airport like the family you’ve seen in Home Alone, only we didn’t forget James because he was chilling on the back of Iris in one of those baby carrier bags :) and lucky for us we could take a toilet break and get a snack before boarding our flight.

Our flight was really pleasant and chill. James did a fantastic job for a 3-year-old. At the Airport we would get a rental car so we could drive off to our Airbnb but they were 2 hours too late to pick us up. By that time we took a taxi because I was too tired to wait. Not to mention I had a cold, a jetlag and was physically exhausted. But the rental services brought the car to our Airbnb, so that was really nice.

We woke up at 03:30 and we’re up and running though the house and sorting out our luggage. Al we needed was a swimming wear and some t-shirts. Put some coffee and a tea for Iris and James so we could enjoy the excitement to the fullest.

We had a very pleasant Airbnb “Casa La Ceiba. I highly recommend them. They had a swimming pool, plenty of parking space for our car and pretty central to commute by car to fit all our needs.

The swimming pool was an enormous hit for our little one. We enjoyed it a lot.

After two days, we said our goodbyes and went to Chiquilá were we took a boat to Isla Holbox. An Island 30 minutes away from the prime land by boat. The Island just breaths relax. Amazing feeling to feel that relaxed. Were we realized how intense our regular life is. The amount of stress we put ourself in is outrageous.

On arrival at Chiquilá, you can park your car at a guarded parking it’s like 100 pesos for 1 day and they’re all the same but don’t leave your car keys they told us so we didn’t. Then follow the crowd we’re the boats are. To get on the Island, pay mandatory taxes. We thought this was a scam, but it wasn’t. Then you have 2 companies that take you across. 9Hermanos and Holbox Express either is ok I guess, we took Holbox Express because we missed 9Hermanos departure. Locals and tourist pay different prices. You can buy one way or return, choice is yours.

James was a little scared of the boat ferry. This would have been his first ferry. Luckily, there was a kid his age sitting right in front of us. Iris told James to say Ola, but he was shy at first. Then after the ferry James said: ”Where is Ola?” and made u laugh.

We spent 6 days on this island and that was plenty. Here we rented an Airbnb “Casa Imox” also recommend it. If you have children, go at least 4 days and if you're a young couple or friends minimum of 3 is great. We had a great time on the Island specially in the morning when the island is still sleeping and it’s not crowded. James made friends easily. He just went to them after we said so and quickly went on playing with them. On our last day, he made friends with Matias and played with him for a couple of hours. We spend our days active in the morning and relaxed at noon and went out for dinner in the evening right before sunset so we could watch the sunset just the 3 of us and a hundred other tourists.

At Painapol; where we ate breakfast. A guy who worked there did some magic tricks on James with coins. He did it so calmly and kindly that he had James’ full attention. He pulled a coin out of James’ ear and his pocket. We laughed to his amaze.

At Cafe del Mar; they offer kid’s toys to play in sand. We loved to go there because James played while we enjoyed a drink and some guacamole. Oh boy did we ate a lot of guacamole, hmmmm. They sometimes gave away all the toys and a parent would ask his child to give one up, but that evolved to a lot of crying and James would give it back.

All the roads are sandy and there are bike- and golf car rentals available. We choose for the bike because we are traveling for a year so we have to make smart choices. But we did rent a golf car just for 1 hour to have fun, and fun we had. We had a blast.

Now Valladolid is waiting for us. So excited for that one too. Mexican people are friendly and the roads are pretty nice to drive on. We really didn’t have an expectation, I guess. We thought food and stuff would be cheaper here, but that varies where you are. Anyway, we’re thankful for exploring Mexico at our own slow pace.
